A brief history of St. George’s Senior Citizens’ Club
In 1974 the need for a meeting place for seniors of St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish was identified. In January of 1975 an executive and a Board of Directors were established to set up programs and to apply for funding through the New Horizons Program . The grant was approved, and it helped furnish the church hall with a fridge, tables, carpet bowling, and various basic supplies.
Members met twice a week for coffee, cards, quilting, story telling, singing, etc.
In February of 1976 the club celebrated its first anniversary with a gala attended by 250 people. The parish hall had quickly become too small a venue. The club negotiated with the City of Saskatoon and rented the Ave. L Skating Rink Change House. The club needed a constitution registered in Regina, membership open to all, plus insurance, utilities, and upkeep; these were the responsibility of the club. A park rental fee of $1 per year was set for 25 years, and any changes to the park or club house had to be approved by the city . The lease was obtained in February, 1977 and the club house became a reality. The board saw this as a “first step” in the creation of a bigger centre - just for seniors.
The board worked with all three levels of government to obtain financial assistance, received $32,000 in member donations, and on November 14, 1979 the sod was turned on the construction of the St. George’s Senior Citizens’ Centre in the location we know today.
The construction was completed on July 10, 1980 at a cost of $227,990 with occupancy on August 15, 1980. The official opening was held on September 21, 1980 and coincided with the 90th anniversary of Ukrainian Settlement in Canada.
The club celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1995 and 25th in 2000. Following our annual AGM in April, 2025, the club celebrated its 50th anniversary. Over the years, the city has granted a tax abatement to our club as a non-profit organization. New Horizons has provided grants to our club to help maintain Capital Expenditures of the facility.
St. George’s Senior Citizens Club is not affiliated with St George’s Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral. It is a non-denominational club that retains links to Ukrainian culture. Members must be 55 years of age or older. Annual membership from January 1st to December 31st is $10.
